Scotland’s head coach Steve Clark says there is a 75% chance that he will leave his role after the 2026 World Cup.

Former West Brom, Leading and Kilmarnock manager has already led Scotland to consecutive European championships, with his next goal remaining in the Nations League top tier in a two-legged playoff with Greece this month.

His attention then changes to securing his qualification for the first Men’s World Cup since 1998 – either Greece, Belarus, Portugal or Denmark lying in Scottish ways.

Clark, who took over from Alex McCleash in 2019, is out of contract after tournaments in the US, Canada and Mexico next year, and the 61-year-old has admitted not to renew the deal.

“When asked how likely he could be to leave after the World Cup campaign, he said, “It’s something I’ve never told my boss.

“But at this moment I’m happy to lower my contract. And I want to go to America. That’s the bottom line. I want to help the players from this group go to the US World Cup.”

Despite the success of the Euro, Scotland missed the 2022 Qatar World Cup after a playoff loss to Ukraine – and Clark has admitted that the next 12 months will determine his future.

He added:

“I decided I wanted to lower my contract. Clearly, there’s a great year and if I arrive at the World Cup and do well in the World Cup, someone might convince me to stay.

“Whether I’m staying here or going somewhere, the next year can determine my future. I think it’s a bit too early to talk about what I’m leaving or staying.”

When asked if he still had ambitions to return to club management, the former St. Mirren and Chelsea defender said:

“I enjoyed being a head coach in Scotland, and this year I enjoy being a head coach in Scotland.
