The Los Angeles charger has agreed to a two-year contract with Guard Meki Becton, the team announced Friday.
Becton is perhaps the most important signature of free agency for chargers. The most important weakness in LA last season was the team’s interior offensive line, with the Chargers struggling to build the effective rushing offense that coach Jim Harbaugh promised for their inefficiency. Interior Line scored the worst grade in an NFL run block victory. CBradley Bozeman (160th), LG Zion Johnson (165th), Rg Trey Pipkins III (188th).

Last season was like a career renaissance from Becton, who was drafted as a tackle in the first round by the New York Jets in 2020, but switched to guard for the Philadelphia Eagles last season and appeared as an impactful run blocker. Becton finished 24th in run-block win percentage among guards ahead of Johnson (43) and Pipkins (50).
Becton will play right guard in Philadelphia and will continue playing Guard, sources told ESPN’s Tim McManus. This movement means the charger releases Pipkins, which saves $6.75 million.
Becton signed a $2.75 million contract for the offseason last year and one-year, following four years in New York with injuries.
With both tackle spots explained, the coaching staff decided to try a 6-foot-7, 363-pound Becton on guard, and the experiment paid off. He won a proper guard job in the summer and started the regular season 15 games for the Super Bowl champion Eagles.
He was part of the dominant offensive line that paved the way for MVP finalist and NFL attacking player of the year Saquon Barkley, finishing in the top 10 with both pass-block win percentages (67%) and run-block win percentages (72%).
The 25-year-old Becton started 30 games with tackle with the Jets. He missed everything except one game in the 2021 and 2022 seasons due to a knee injury.
