In this year’s latest series of pirate hijackings off Somalia, Eunavfor Atalanta reported that he was suspected of hijacking a Yemini Dhow or a fishing boat near Eyl on the north coast of Puntland on March 16th.
Eunavfor Atalanta said the incident was classified as a hijacking and that seven hijackers were on board. Dow has eight Somali national crew members.
“Eunavfor Atalanta monitors the event and coordinates closely with the Total Maritime Forces (CMF) and the Yemeni Coast Guard,” the Navy said.
It’s the latest in a string of such incidents this year. Yemini Saytuun-2 was hijacked by the Pirates on February 17th, when he left the ship five days later. On February 8th, Dow Al Najma was hijacked from Eyl and released on February 13th by the Eunavfor Atalanta army.
The increase in fishing boat hijacking has prompted concerns about the possibility of a revival of attacks on large commercial vessels passing through the Somali coast. Previously it was used as motherhood by pirates to launch attacks on vessels passing hundreds of miles from the Somali coastline.
