Opening Summary

Good morning and welcome to the US Politics Live Blog. I’m Tom Ambrose. We bring you all the latest news this Friday morning.

We are calling for the dismantling of the education sector, starting with the news that President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday.

The order states that Education Secretary Linda McMahon will “take all necessary steps to bring the Department of Education closure back to the state and the community to the fullest extent appropriate and permitted by law.”

The AP reported that eliminating the department completely would be a tedious task and would likely require Congressional actions.

In the weeks since he took office, the Trump administration has already cut department staff in half and has re-evaluated much of the department’s work.

Trump adviser Elon Musk’s government efficiency cut dozens of contracts that he dismissed as “awakening” and wasted. It hampered the Institute of Educational Sciences, which collects data on academic advancements in the country.

The main role of an agency is financial. Every year, we distribute billions of dollars with federal funds to universities and schools to manage our federal student loan portfolio. Closing the department means redistribute each of these obligations to another institution.

The Ministry of Education plays an important regulatory role in student services, from people with disabilities to low-income and homeless children.

In other news:

Elon Musk reportedly visited the Pentagon on Friday to get an explanation of the US military’s plans to fight the war with China.

Trump said he is withdrawing an executive order targeting democratic law firms after the company agreed to provide $40 million in free legal services to support his administration’s purposes.

A federal judge ordered that masks’ so-called “government efficiency” be blocked from accessing Social Security records and deleted previously obtained information.

Judge James Boasberg, former law school housemate of Brett Kavanaugh, said the Trump administration “avoided” his orders in the case of Venezuelan immigrants who were deported to El Salvador.

Trump administration lawyers have accepted the view that the alien enemy laws that Trump called for to deport alleged members of Venezuelan gangs allows immigration agents to enter the home without a warrant.

The Justice Department has brought charges against three unnamed individuals for using or using Molotov cocktails to attack Tesla cars and dealers.

Immigration agents have arrested Badar Khan Suri, an Indian national with a valid visa who is conducting research at Georgetown University, and are attempting to deport him for alleged support for Hamas. The judge later temporarily banned the DHS from deporting him.

Tim Waltz, who Kamala Harris chose as her running companion, not only sees the country’s sinister future under Trump, but also sees the opportunity for Democrats to regain their general support.

Trump has urged the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates. This is not what the president normally does. Yesterday, the central bank held stable interest rates, predicting weaker economic growth.

A federal judge on Thursday directed the Trump administration to explain why he didn’t look back on the flight carrying Deporties to El Salvador.

US District Judge James Boasberg requested response after a flight that carried Venezuelan immigrants who the Trump administration claimed to be a gang member after the judge temporarily blocked deportation under 18th century wartime law. Boasberg had instructed the administration to return planes already in the air to the US when he ordered a halt.

Boasberg had insisted that the administration must provide flight details or withheld to it to harm “national secrets.” The administration resisted the judge’s demands and called it an “unnecessary judicial fishing” expedition.

Donald Trump has rescinded an executive order targeting prominent democratic law firms after agreeing to provide $40 million in free legal services to support his administration’s goals.

The White House has lawyers targeted law firms offering legal work that Trump opposes. Last week he issued an order threatening to halt the aggressive security clearance of Paul, Weiss’ lawyers and end the federal contracts the company has.

However, the president suddenly turned around following the Trump and Brad Carp meeting. Brad Carp is chairman of law firms Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton and Garrison over the White House order.

Trump’s orders picked out the job of Mark Pomerantz, who previously worked for the company, overseeing a Trump finances investigation by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office before Trump became president. Pomeranz once likened the president to a mob boss.
