The US has said its new prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Greenland, responds to Donald Trump’s latest statement and says he wants to control the vast Arctic Circle.
“President Trump says the US has won Greenland. Let’s be clear. The US won’t get it. We don’t belong to anyone else. We decide our future,” Nielsen said.
In an interview with NBC on Saturday, the US President said: “I’ll get Greenland. Yeah, 100%,” he insisted, “It’s a good chance that I can do that without military strength… but I won’t take anything off the table.”
Trump said he had a real conversation about annexing Danish territory “absolutely.”
Nielsen, the 33-year-old former Minister of Industry and Minerals, was sworn in as Greenland’s youngest prime minister on Friday. At his first press conference as a leader, in his hometown of Nouk, he sought political unity to combat external pressure. His message was clear: “When we are under pressure as people, we have to stand together.”
He was sworn in hours before the famous delegation led by US vice-president JD Vance arrived on the island. Vance said: “Our message to Denmark is very simple. We’re not doing a good job from the people of Greenland. We’re not investing in the people of Greenland, so we’re not investing in this incredibly beautiful land security architecture.”
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Rocke Rasmussen said on Saturday:
“This is not the way you talk to your close allies, and I still think Denmark and the United States are close ally.”
