President Trump’s baseline tariffs – a 10% tax on all imports into the US – will come into effect tomorrow, April 5th.
But it’s not all-around fees.
Trump charges higher rates for countries considered “worst criminals” on trade. These will take effect on April 9th. The European Union faces 20%, Japan faces 24%, and China faces 34%.
China’s rates are added to previous duties. This means that the total tariff on exports to the US is 54%.
The UK is subject to 10% baseline tariffs only.
BBC Verify considered how these tariffs were resolved.

Over 25,000 jobs in the UK’s auto industry could be at risk as a result of new US tariffs
The global automotive industry was a huge hit, with 25% tariffs coming into effect on all foreign-made cars shortly after its announcement earlier this week.
However, hundreds of products are exempt. These include energy products, some minerals and chemicals used in energy and manufacturing.
Not all countries are affected by new tariffs. Canada and Mexico are not mentioned this week, but most imports could still face 25% tariffs.
Russia is not on the list either. The White House reportedly said existing sanctions on Russia were to “eliminate meaningful trade.”
There’s more to be said about who is being charged in the At-A-Glance guide.
