“Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” may now be a cultural phenomenon… But while filming the pilot, production had shoelaces budgets and made crude decisions about the health of its cast members.
Audrey Dubois, the original yellow power ranger for the pilot episode, tells the story of the upcoming episode of “Hollywood Demons,” entitled “The Dark Side of the Power Rangers”… Describing the OG episode was filmed in the desert with a heat of 110 degrees.
DuBois says that one of the actors – playing the villain character – was decorated with a wetsuit and a rubber mask…and he collapsed to the ground and suffered from a heat stroke midway through the shoot.
Audrey says she and the other actors didn’t want to film, but the people behind the scenes knew they had to crank out the pilot… so they stripped the actor and offered $100 to anyone willing to wear his clothes so they could continue filming.
Someone did so and filming resumed… Audrey says the actor, who suffered from heat stroke, is “slack in the dirt.”
DuBois says he didn’t feel that going back to shooting was right… but the cast didn’t have much choice.
“Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” debuted in 1993…and it led to the rise of a massive global brand with toys, multiple spinoffs and other products.
In “Dark Side of the Power Rangers,” the former cast and crew members detailed the shady side behind the show.
“Dark Side of the Power Rangers” will air only on streaming on Mondays at 9pm/6pm on ID and Max.
