Johannesburg is on guard amid heavy rain

Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services (EMS) are on high alert as heavy rain affects many parts of the city, SABC News reports. EMS spokesman Xolile Khumalo advises drivers to drive carefully, maintain safe distances and avoid flooded roads and low-lying bridges. Residents living near the riverbank are urged to take extreme care to ensure safety during this period.

A corrupt transportation internship in stab wound work

Rutendo Maggoka, a 28-year-old intern at Mpumalanga Department of Transport, has appeared in the court of Magistrate Tohoyandu on corruption charges after being arrested for stabbing surgery, the IOL reports. Police alleges he has sought R6,500 from the victim and has promised to work as a traffic officer. Following the April 1 tip-off, the state’s anti-corruption unit set up operations that Magoka was caught accepting R2,000 from the victim. The lawsuit has been postponed until April 17, 2025 for bail applications, and further claims are possible as the investigation continues. Limpopo Police Chief Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe praised the swift lawsuit taken against corruption and urged the public to report such crimes.

The government has pledged to support rape victims at Matatiere schools

The government has pledged to support the families of three young rape victims in Matatiere, Eastern Cape, where three children, ages 6 and 7, were attacked at school last year, EWN reports. Parents have questioned the safety of educational facilities, especially as one of the affected schools is open. In the Gobizenbe countryside, one victim, a seven-year-old girl, continues to suffer from serious physical and emotional trauma, including health complications that led to her hospitalization. She has since transferred to a school in KwaZulu-Natal for a fresh start.
