British automaker Jaguar Land Rover said it will suspend US cargo for a month to assess the impact of US President Donald Trump’s tariffs on vehicle imports.
It comes as a shock wave through the auto industry and disruption from the Trump administration’s fundamental tariff rollout Royles global stock.
The US President has implemented a 25% tariff on all foreign vehicles imported into the country. This is the movement that came into effect Thursday. The White House also said it intends to place tariffs on some auto parts by May 3rd.
“As we work to address new terms of business with our business partners, we are enacting planned short-term actions, including a suspension of shipments in April, to develop a medium to long-term plan,” a Jaguar Land Rover spokesman told CNBC on Sunday.
Jaguar Land Rover, one of the UK’s biggest automakers, describes the US as a “significant market” for the company’s luxury brand.
In particular, given the high globalisation of supply chains and the heavy reliance on manufacturing operations across North America, the escalating trade war is expected to have a major impact on the global automotive industry.
In fact, for days after Trump’s car rates went into effect, the automotive giant responded by hiking prices, leviing import fees, suspending production and announcing plans to fire staff.
British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer said his government will respond to Trump’s tariffs with a “cool and calm head” and negotiate a potential US trade deal.
The UK has often suffered a baseline import duties of 10% this week, in addition to a 25% tariff on automotive exports and steel and aluminum products.
