Abuja – INEC, the Independent National Election Commission, has denied social media reports that its chairman, Professor Mahmoud Yakub, has been fired by President Bora Tinubu.
The virus’s WhatsApp message showed that Mahmood was fired and replaced by Professor Olamilekan.
“Professor Mahmoud Yakub, chairman of INEC, has been replaced by Professor Basir Olamilekan by President Tinubu.
In response to a message from Vanguard, the message to Rotimi Oyekanmi, the CPS Director-General of the INEC Chairman, simply said, “Please, ignore it. That’s not true.”
Yakub, who is closing his second tenure, is expected to close his system towards the end of the year.
The process of appointing an INEC chair is to nominate a candidate and forward the details to the State Department’s DSS for profiling.
After such a screening, the President will then take his name to the National Council for advisory review. Based on the results, the president sends his name to the Senate for screening and confirmation.
