Mahikeng learner died after allegedly eating street vendor snacks

A learner in Mahiken in the northwest is said to have died after consuming snacks purchased from street vendors, SABC News reports. The two sisters, ages 8 and 10, reportedly purchased snacks from a hawker near the school in Ramosadi village and began experiencing severe stomach cramps after arriving at school. One sibling passed away and the other was hospitalized in the ICU. The family accused the school of not seeking help on time, claiming that the school’s management and principals did not notify the family despite seeking medical assistance or being given an emergency contact number.

More flooding is expected as Bloemhof Dam opens additional flood gates

According to EWN, communities near the Vaal River faced further flooding after additional lock gates were opened at Blue Emhof Dam. The Water and Sanitation Department confirmed that both dams continue to carry controlled water releases to lower the rising water level. These releases have already overflowed riverbanks downstream, flooding lowland settlements, damaging infrastructure and destroying homes. Wisne Mabasa, a spokesman for the Ministry of Water and Sanitation, said five more lock gates at Vardam remain open and the controlled release will affect the settlements, particularly within the 100-year flood line, across riverbank distances. The locks are opened as part of safety protocols to prevent dam failures, which can have devastating consequences.
