Jeffrey Shamsterling was able to remove department-issued Taser from the officer’s mission belt during a traffic stop Thursday in Orange County, California, and attempted to deploy multiple times to officers. The department claims that “at that point there was a shooting involving an officer.”
PD continued to confirm what law enforcement sources told us on Friday… Jeffrey was uncooperative and attacked the officers.
PD says he gave Jeffrey medical assistance until the Newport Beach Fire Department arrived on the scene. He was later declared dead in the hospital.
The California Department of Justice is aware of the shooting and is conducting an independent investigation. Once the investigation is completed, the findings will be handed over to the Special Prosecutors section of the DOJ for an independent review.
Lydia told TMZ on Friday … “My family and I have been devastated by the loss of my brother. We are grateful for the pouring of love and support from our friends, family and the community. We ask for privacy when we mourn.”
Jeffrey was 45 years old.
