The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has reported a 34% increase in the number of accidents that occurred this year on Easter and independent holidays compared to the same period in 2024.

Police said the number of deaths during Easter holidays in 2025 fell slightly from 25 to 21 compared to the previous year, but in reality the number of injuries has increased from 159 recorded last year to 178 this year.

In a statement released Tuesday, National Police spokesman Paul Nyati said both the number of accidents and the number of injuries rose in the same period last year.

“On Easter and Independence Holidays, a total of 384 road traffic accidents were recorded, compared to the 286 recorded at the same time last year.

“The number of fatal road traffic accidents and people killed has decreased from 27 to 24, while the number of fatal accidents has decreased from 26 to 21. The number of injured has increased from 159 to 178,” Nyathi said.

He highlighted the most serious accident that occurred in Norton on April 21, 2025.

“One of the road traffic accidents recorded on Easter and independent holidays in 2025 included an accident that occurred on April 21 at a 51km peg along Hararebula Wayo Road around 1200 hours.

“The result was that three passengers died on the spot and one died when they were admitted to the Norton Hospital.”

Nyati also turned his attention to the tragic consequences of a hit-and-run accident in which the driver did not stop at the scene.

“Three hit and run fatal accidents were recorded in Murewa and Harare during the period. The first incident occurred on April 19, 2025, at a 57km peg along Mutkochdiedust Road, where an unknown motorcyclist attacked a pedestrian and speeded up the Tinwald Elevated Road when an unknown male adult was attacked by an identified vehicle and died on the spot.

“On the same day, another accident occurred along Harare Bulawayo Road near Puma Service Station in the White House, where a 66-year-old man was attacked by a Nissan caravan.
