Cape Town – Ghanaian President John Mahama has suspended Judge Gertrude Turkorneu, marking the first time that the sitting Supreme Court justice has been suspended in the country’s history.
The suspension follows the filing of three private petitions seeking her removal on reasons permitted by the Constitution, including incompetence and fraud.
Turkarnu, Ghana’s third female director appointed in 2023, previously survived an attempt to fire under former President Akufo-Addo.
A five-person committee is set to review the case and invite her to respond again before making a final decision. Her suspension sparked a strong backlash from former Attorney General Godfred Yeboa Dam, including what she called an unprecedented attack on judicial independence.
