The Cariba fisherman owned after the boat capsized after the attack by the hippo.
The Human-Wild conflict incident occurred at the Gatche Gatche Fishing Camp, where searches began for the missing body.
Inspector Ian Cowella, a spokesman for Zimbabwe’s Republic of Police (ZRP) Mashonalandwest, confirmed the tragedy.
“On April 25th, 2025, two men drowned in the lake when the boat capsized after being attacked by a hippo at a sturdy gatch fishing camp in Kariba.
“They are unable to swim to the coast and their bodies are still missing. A report was made at ZRP Kariba by officials at Zin Parks (Zimbabwe National Park and Wildlife Authority) at Charalasite,” Kohwera said.
ZRP Sub Aqua joins the scene and efforts to find the body are still underway.
Kohwera warned public members of wildlife-infected areas to be vigilant to curb the valence of conflicts in human life.
“Police continue to encourage wildlife to rely on or continue to do day-to-day business in infected areas because there is always a high chance of being attacked,” he added.
