ZANZIBAR – Zanzibar Dhow Country Music Academy (DCMA) proudly celebrates the extraordinary journey of Tryphon Evarist, a talented multi-instrumentalist, music educator and artistic director, whose musical odyssey began within the very halls of DCMA.
From his humble beginnings as a music student, Triphon blossomed into one of Zanzibar’s most respected and influential musical figures. After years of unwavering dedication, Tryphon won a music diploma from the DCMA.
His inspiring rise to accordion teacher, composer, performer and mentor, respected by curious learners, is a powerful testament to talent developed through education, perseverance and passion.
DCMA Director Halda Alkanaan praised Tryphon’s music evolution and contribution to the island’s vibrant cultural scene at a press conference held at DCMA’s Stonetown campus ahead of the highly anticipated album’s release on May 3rd.
“The Tryphon, known for his incredible versatility, commands a wide range of traditional and contemporary instruments,” says Alkanaan.
“He has worked with many local and international bands to combine the rich heritage of traditional Zanzibari music with contemporary aphrofusion style.”
In 2024, Triphon’s artistry won three prestigious music awards: Best Singer, Best Instrumentalist and Best Ta Arab Song. Talk to a journalist,

He is currently teaching music theory, vocal techniques, traditional drums and dance, and is also engaged in the archives and transcription of Taraab music.
Tryphon also serves as a DCMA mentor, guiding young talent and respecting cultural roots while exploring new creative perspectives. Now there’s another big milestone waiting for us.
On May 3, 2025, Tryphon will release his debut album, “Amka.” This is a rich collection of 10 original tracks, including the award-winning composition of Taarab, who has captivated national audiences.
“This album is a reflection of my journey, my roots, my identity and the future I envision Zanzibari music, and it’s more than an album.
DCMA will be taking part in the release of its official album at Idris Abdulwakil Hall in Kikwajuni, Stonetown, inviting music lovers, artists, cultural advocates and the wider community.
The event promises an unforgettable celebration of the power of music, culture and artistic transformation.
