The first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs came to an end with a thrilling weekend game seven. The Jets beat the St. Louis Blues 4-3 in improbable fashion on Sunday night, with host Winnipeg scoring goals with three seconds left in regulation to avoid elimination. On Saturday, the Dallas star banished the Colorado Avalanche in a 4-2 comeback victory as Mikko Lantanen revenges against his former team with a third-term hat-trick.
The Jets scored two goals in the game, two minutes at 2-0 and 3-1 in the game, and two minutes at 2 minutes remaining in the game. Vladislav Namestnikov scored with 1:56 left, with Cole Perfetti scoring with the rest of the game with three seconds remaining. Then, after a sudden death play of over 36 minutes, Adam Lowry flipped over with Neil Pion’s shot to finish Game 7, the third-longest in NHL history.
In the other Game 7 Classics of the weekend, when the stars went 2-0 in the third season, Lantanen scored two goals to tie the game together, and then helped Wyatt Johnston win the game in under four minutes. To pour a little more salt into the wound, Rantanen sealed the victory with an empty net goal to complete the hat trick.
The second round begins Monday night, with the reigning champion Florida Panthers paving the way for the series to open with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Canada has not developed the Stanley Cup since the 1993 Montreal Canadiens, but five teams made the playoffs, leading to runner-ups last season, Toronto, Winnipeg and Edmonton.
