Somalia: Voice of Somalia Support for Palestine at the Arab Summit in Algiers

Algeria, Algeria – Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nu (who is known as Madhuv), the chairman of Somali’s federal parliament, has once again reiterated Somali’s unwavering position in favor of the Palestinian people and his right to establish an independent state with Jerusalem as the capital. His remarks came on Sunday on the second day of the ongoing meeting of Arab Parliamentary Speaker in the Algerian capital.

The high-level gathering of heads of Arab legislative bodies from across the region is organized by the Algerian National Assembly and chaired by Chairman Ibrahim Baugali. The event will serve as an important platform for regional cooperation and legislative coordination amid rising political tensions and humanitarian crises in the Arab world.

In his speech, Chairman Madhuv spread his deep gratitude to the Algerian Parliament and the government for organising and holding the meeting. He also praised Speaker Boali’s leadership for piloting the discussion by describing it as “diplomatic clarity and local sensitivity.”

Turning to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Madhuv supported the Palestinians’ longstanding aspirations for the nation, seeking “real collective efforts” from Arab countries and the international community.

“The Palestinian issue is a core issue of the Arab world and requires unwavering unity and action,” he emphasized.

Madhuv’s solid stance reflects historic solidarity with the Palestinian cause in Somali. This is a position rooted in decades of diplomatic alignment and moral support at international forums, including the United Nations and the Arab League.

The Somali speaker’s remarks come as the situation on the occupied Palestinian territory continues to deteriorate. In recent months, Israeli military operations in the West Bank and Gaza have elicited widespread condemnation from human rights groups and global authority. At the same time, efforts to revive peace negotiations have been stagnant for the large part.

By reaffirming Somali’s position at this global stage, Madhuv speakers have shown lasting consistency with Mogadishu’s Arab consensus and their refusal to normalize with Israel in the absence of a two-state solution.

Beyond Palestine, Madhuv raised Somalia’s concerns over Sudan’s lingering crisis. This has been swirling into humanitarian catastrophes since the outbreak of an armed conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in April 2023. More than 8 million people have been displaced, and mediation efforts remain fragmented.

He called for “respect for national sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states,” and emphasized the need for local actors to refrain from promoting further instability. His comments reflect Somalia’s own sensitivity to foreign interference.

The speaker concluded his speech with a strong plea for unity among the Arab Parliament, urging strengthening cooperation on development policy, legislative integrity, and collective implementation of resolutions adopted during the conference. He emphasized that even the most comprehensive solutions would remain ineffective without a shared vision.

“I imagine a challenge facing our region – from occupation to internal conflict – an active, coordinated and committed Arab legislative front,” he said.

As a member of both the Arab League and the Islamic Cooperation Organization (OIC), Somalia has consistently positioned its fellow Arab countries on issues of regional interest. In particular, unwavering support for the Palestinian cause has been a pillar of its foreign policy since the 1960s, even amidst internal conflicts and changing leadership at home.

Madhuv, an experienced politician who took office as chairman of the National House in 2022, has previously used local platforms to seek greater unity and conflict resolution in Arab and African countries. His recent visit to Algiers strengthens Somali’s commitment to multilateral diplomacy despite the unique challenges of the Horn of Africa facing security, development and national construction.

The Arab Parliamentary Session meeting will conclude with a joint declaration that outlines commitments on Palestine, Sudan and other pressing regional issues. Madhuv’s intervention could be prominently characterized in the final communica- tion, particularly as Arab countries work to define a unified attitude on issues that transcend boundaries and ideology.
