Asmara – Berik sub -Zone of the Central Region was officially declared by Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) at a ceremony held on April 30 under the theme “Cooperative Efforts – Avoiding Female Genital Mutilation.”
Subzone administrator Tesfu Fesehation said the declarations have been made earlier at the village and local control level, and the milestone marks zone-level declarations.
Colonel Gebrehans Waldegas, Director of Social Welfare for the Central Region, highlighted the serious health impacts of FGM and called for active involvement from all stakeholders to eradicate the practice. He also congratulated the residents of the subzone.
Zerit Tewoldebrhan, the area’s managing director, stressed that making a declaration is not enough and called on residents and agencies to ensure continuous monitoring and support of its sustainability.
The event was characterized by a general knowledge competition between students. The award was awarded to the recipients, and the recognition certificate was presented to the village, which was freely declared from female genital mutilation.
