President Lazaro Chakwera has pledged the full administration’s support for nurses and midwives when Malawi joined the world in 2025 to commemorate international nurses on the NKHWAZI ADMARC ground, calling it the “backbone of national development.”
In his keynote speech, Chakwera highlighted the important role nurses play in saving lives and responding to emergencies, especially in rural areas. He announced that the government is accelerating the construction of more than 200 health posts to expand access to healthcare and create more employment opportunities.
“People in rural communities deserve quality healthcare. We invest in training centres to not only build facilities but also equip nurses with skills that meet both local and international standards,” Chakwera said.
The president also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring nurses with mass recruitment and timely promotions, improving working conditions and dealing with staff shortages.
Chakwera praises the dedication of Malawian nurses both domestically and internationally, saying their professionalism has earned global recognition. “I’m proud of our nurses. They carry the spirit of this country wherever we go.”
The event, which featured thousands of health workers and community members, underscored the urgency to strengthen the health sector ahead of the 2025 election.
