Nimba County Senator Samuel G. Kogal was banned on Tuesday from participating in the ongoing elections for new speakers in the House.
Cogar, recently elected and proven by the National Election Committee (NEC) as a Nimba County Senator, was seen as present among the House members. However, he did not attend the Senate session, which he met again today, but instead chose to attend the House session, and apparently hoped to vote in the speaker election caused by the resignation of now Senator J. Fonaticoffa.
His presence during the session sparked enquiries regarding his eligibility to participate in the vote. In response to concerns, House Commissioner Mildred Sayon notified members that NEC had officially notified the vacancies of NIMBA District #5 seats after the election of Cogar and subsequent recognition as a senator.
“As a result, his seat has been declared vacant and he is not eligible to vote,” the clerk said.
Speaker elections are currently underway at the House Chamber of Commerce. The race is between two prominent lawmakers. Rep. Richard Nagbe Kuhn is supported by the majority bloc and is Rep. Musa Hassan Billiti, chairman of the House Rule Law Caucus.
