Former President Hifikepunye Pohamba has expressed concern about Angolan children who are missing education as they are employed as cattle herders in Namibia.
Speaking at the Namibian Science and Technology graduation ceremony in Yenhana, he called for the end of the practice.
“The children in Angola will be taken to Namibia and to take care of goats and cattle while our own children are in school. Can’t we end this situation?” Pohamba said he emphasized the shortage of schools in southern Angola.
He proposed to consult with President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah to address this issue with Angolan leaders.
Pohamba highlighted the importance of education as a tool to change lives, communities and nations. He urged higher education institutions to avoid refusing to register with people who cannot afford tuition.
“Can a country really thrive if the door to knowledge remains closed to the less fortunate? We must see investment in education as a foundation for economic growth, social justice and national development, not as a cost,” he said.
