Residents said the spill has been going on for more than a week and the rough drums have been looted by enthusiastic community members.
Several residents have been expelled from their homes after the bursting of the Trans Niger Delta Pipeline in the B-Dere community in the Gokana Municipal Area of Ogoni, River.
The incident caused oil to spill over a section of the community for more than a week.
During a site visit to the affected community on Thursday, Premium Times was notified that leaks had been underway since May 6th, leading to oil spills from the pipeline to residential and farms.
Upon arriving at the oil spill scene on Thursday afternoon, newspapers observed community members scooping up crude oil with gallons and buckets.
“This leak has been going on for over a week since May 6th. The entire area has penetrated the smell of crude oil, making it difficult to breathe. Cooking becomes dangerous due to the risk of explosion and forces many residents to move,” a community member told the Premium Times.
Residents reported that Shell staff had visited the site to investigate the cause and take steps to stop the flow.
On Thursday, some officials were said to be Shell employees and began pulling crude oil to tankers amidst strict security.
Large soldiers were stationed in strategic locations within the community to protect officials while preventing community members from scooping up crude things.
Various parts of the community had gallons of crude oil taken from leaking pipelines. The surrounding atmosphere blew away the smell of hydrocarbons, which had the effect of the greenery of the environment.
