The Anaheim duck traded goalkeeper John Gibson for the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday, finishing speculation about his future.
Detroit sent the Ducks a selection of the 2027 rounds in exchange for goaltender Petr Mrazek, a four-round selection of 2026, and a selection of the 2027 rounds in exchange for Gibson, who spent the first 12 seasons of his NHL career at Anaheim. Gibson remains two years behind the eight-year contract he signed with a $6.4 million cap hit in 2018.
“We would like to thank him for his time in our organization and for being an integral part of the duck for over a decade,” Pat Verbeek, general manager of Ducks, said in a statement. “It became clear that John wanted new opportunities, and after much discussion with him, we felt that this was the right time to make this move. John and his family will become a large part of the community and dedication to Orange County will leave a lasting impact. John and his family hope for the best in the next chapter.”
Gibson, 31, was considered by many to be the best goaltender available this offseason. He is rumoured to be moving across multiple seasons thanks to his manageable cap hits and lack of success in duck rankings. With the emergence of Anaheim’s 25-year-old goalkeeper Lucas Dostal over the past two seasons, Trading Gibson has become more feasible. The fact that Gibson only had a 10-team Notetrade clause opened a market from Pittsburgh.
After seeing him finish seventh in the Calder and Vezina trophies after a standout rookie season in 2015-16, Gibson’s numbers remained solid even if they slipped out of playoff competition. They soaked up 2022-24 before last season’s rebound. Gibson had an average of .911 save percentage and 2.77 goals in 29 games despite dealing with a string of injuries.
In his career, Gibson was 204-217-63 in 506 games, with a save percentage of .910 and a goal (average) of 2.89.
Mrazek, 33, will be signed with a $4.25 million cap hit throughout next season. Anaheim will be the sixth team in the 14th NHL season. Mrazek was 12-21-2 in 38 games between Chicago and Detroit, with a save percentage of 0.891 and 3.35 goals (averaged 3.35). Both Mrazek and Dostal are Czech.
