Senegal coach Aliu Sisse has vowed to end his 12-year absence from Libya’s major international tournaments, expressing confidence in his ability to bring the Mediterranean knights back to a big stage.

Speaking in his official announcement in Tripoli, Cise highlighted his determination to turn Libya into a competitive African football.

The former Senegalese coach who led his country to Totalenergies CAF AFCON Glory in 2022 and the knockout stage appearance at the World Cup believes his experience can bring success to the Libyan side.

“I’m honored to be here in Libya and be excited about this challenge. The Libya national team has talented players. With the right approach, we can build a team that can compete at the highest level,” Cise said.

Mission to restore Libya’s international presence

Libya has not been featured in the Totalenergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) since 2012 and has not competed in the FIFA World Cup.

Cissé is determined to change that, emphasizing that his appointment is about long-term development rather than short-term outcomes.

“Through cooperation and effort, we can bring the varsity to a new level of professionalism,” he said.

“We have great players in the Libyan League and we’ll also look for international experts to strengthen our team.”

Cise’s appointment is seen as a strategic move by the Libyan Football Federation (LFF) given his impressive track record with Senegal.

As a player, he captained Senegal in the quarterfinals of the 2002 World Cup and as a coach, he mastered the AFCON victory in 2022, securing the first ever continental title.

Major World Cup Qualifiers on the Horizon

Cissé’s tenure begins with two important qualifying rounds in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. Libya currently plays the second-highest in Group D with seven points (one in leader Cameroon) and will face Angola on March 20th in Benghazi and the indomitable Lions on March 25th.

Winnings in these matches will put Libya in a strong position for the first time in its history to compete in the World Cup.

“The support of the media and fans in Libyan is very important. Working together allows us to achieve something special,” added Cissé.

Libya’s last major international success came in 2014 when he won the Totalenergies CAF African Nations Championship (Chan), a tournament for home-based players.

Based on its success, Cissé attempts to blend domestic talent with experienced professionals overseas.

The new era of Libyan football

Cissé’s arrival sparks optimism in Libyan, with fans hoping that his leadership can stimulate the team.

His disciplined and tactical approach helps Senegal become one of Africa’s most powerful teams, and Libya wants to benefit from the same philosophy.

The former Senegalese captain is currently tasked with writing a new chapter in Libyan football, with a reputation for instilling his belief in his team.

The journey begins with the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, with all eyes lying whether Cisse can beat Libyan qualifying jinx.
