The United Nations condemns extrajudicial killings in Sudan’s capital Khartoum
Volker Türk, the UN Human Rights Director, expressed concern over multiple reports of summary executions of Khartoum’s rapid support force (RSF) collaborators following the recapture by the Army. The Turks called on the army commanders to “end the arbitrary deprivation of life.” Official UN comments follow a horrifying video on social media. “It was clearly photographed in the South and East Hartwoo,” showing an armed man dressed in uniform civilian clothing, who lost the city’s residents. The country’s latest crisis began in April 2023, when violent clashes broke out between the RSF and the Sudanese Army (SAF), which formed the transitional government following the overthrow of long-time ruler Omar al-Bashir in 2019.
Connecting countries to test collective pandemic response
The two-day simulation, called Exercise Polaris, brought together over 12 countries to test the World Health Organization’s Global Health Emergency Corps (GHEC), a framework designed to strengthen the country’s emergency workforce. This exercise simulated the outbreak of fictional viruses spreading around the world. Participating countries include Ethiopia, Mozambique, Somalia and Uganda. Countries participated through the National Health Emergency Coordination Structure.
President Boaches orders investigation into a massive blackout at Liberia’s international airport
President Joseph Boachey’s move came after the March 25 incident in which airport authorities said the birds caused a sudden blackout, temporarily crippling the operation of the terminal, causing public outrage. The president formed a committee led by his national security advisers, mandating that it “reachs the bottom” of the issue and orders that the person responsible should be held accountable. Some Liberians have plunged into their fun on social media with the idea that birds are the cause of the halt.
Sudanese airstrikes destroy vehicles and supplies of RSF militias
Warplanes launched five airstrikes targeting 10 rapid support forces (RSFs) in and around El-Fashir. The airstrikes destroyed a ZS vehicle carrying three tractor trailer trucks, five land cruisers, and weapons, ammunition and logistics supplies heading towards Merritt. The special forces and joint forces continued to enter into operations in the El Fasir area, discovering caches of hidden weapons and preventing militia penetration. The weapons were seized and the operation also thwarted attempts by some militia members to infiltrate Elfasil.
After Trump’s “Nobody” remarks, Lesotho hit with the highest tariffs on US tariffs
US President Donald Trump attacked Lesotho and was the highest collection imposed on any state on his long target list with a 50% mutual trade tariff. In March, Trump ridiculed Lesotho as a country that “no one has ever heard of.” Lesotho’s trade surplus with the United States was driven primarily by the exports of diamonds and textiles. In 2024, White House figures revealed that the US exported just $2.8 million worth of goods to Lesotho, while imports from the South African country reached $237.3 million. The White House claimed that Lesotho had imposed a 99% tariff on US goods.
Sahel Alliance seeks close ties with Russia
Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger Foreign Ministers held their first official talks with Russia as they are trying to strengthen ties with the Russian Federation after cutting ties with France. The meeting attended by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov focused on strengthening political, military and economic cooperation under the Sahel State (AES) Union, an alliance formed by three military-led governments. It marks the first round of “consultations” between Russia and the Sahel alliance, a political and military alliance created by Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger in 2023. The military junta took power in a coup between 2020 and 2023 across the three countries. They expelled the French troops, retreated from the Bloc Ecowas in West Africa, and relied on Russia for political and military aid. Russia has already signed defense agreements with three AES countries, supplying weapons and military training.
The Nigerian South African court’s ruling is a pastor’s case known as “assault” in the fight against gender-based violence.
The Congressional Judiciary Committee has condemned televangelist Timothy Omotoso on 32 serious charges, including rape, human trafficking and racket, calling it a set-off with Gender-Based Violence (GBV). The GQEBERHA High Court ruled that the National Prosecutor’s Authority (NPA) failed to prove guilt beyond reasonable doubt, citing inappropriate conduct and weak cross-examination by the prosecutor. Judiciary Committee Chairman Xola Nqola described the outcome of the incident as “an attack on the Fighting Gender-Based Violence (GBV)” in particular following the murder of Pamela Mabini, an activist who supported the witnesses in the incident. The NPA said it is studying the ruling and will consider legal options.

Mnangagwa fires Minister of Environment amid speculation about political strategy
President Emerson Mnangagwa has immediately and effectively dismissed Sithomebiso Gil Gladys Nyoni because of his position as Minister of Environment, Climate and Wildlife. No official reasons for the removal of Nyoni were provided. However, these latest adjustments to the Cabinet and other major institutions, including the security sector, are widely seen as strategic appointments designed to keep Mnangawa firmly in the driver’s seat and potentially extend his term beyond 2028.
