When it was founded in 1964, the purpose of the African Development Bank was to become a bank in Africa.

More than 60 years later, it became the continent’s highest multilateral fundraising institution, with the only African consistently awarded AAA ratings for nearly a decade. first. As well as profits in financial markets and their associated fame, ratings are the result of strict work that has long-term impact on the continent. Among other accolades that confirm the institution’s international recognition, there is the pride of the place.

The most transparent institution

The AAA ratings awarded to banks by major global rating agencies – Moody’s, Standard & Poor’s, Fitch and the Japanese credit rating agency, reflect their solvency and exceptional ability to fulfill their financial commitments.

Global Finance, the prestigious US Magazine specializing in financial markets and investment banks, has named the African Development Bank “Best Global Multilateral Financial Institutions 2021.” The bank is also ranked first in the Aid Transparency Index published by the Publish What You Fund. Similarly, the African Development Fund, the banking group’s concession finance window, is ranked second by the Washington, DC-based Global Development Centre, ahead of 49 concessional financial institutions in all OECD countries due to the quality of development support.

In other words, the impact of the bank, driven by the five strategic priorities launched in 2015, the High 5, has led to real-world concrete actions that have changed the lives of millions of Africans.

“For the past decade, African Development Bank’s work has impacted over 515 million people, including 231 million women,” Adesina said in the 38th regular session of the African Union’s Head of State and Government Parliament.

Covid-19, food security and cutting edge banking

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the African Development Bank Group was at the forefront of a health emergency and established a US$10 billion fund to quickly respond to Africa’s needs. This outstanding leadership has been praised by the international community.

Thanks to the US$3 billion “Fight Covid-19” social impact bond issued in March 2020, the bank was named “Best Covid-19 Pandemic Bond Issuer” by leading players in the bond market. The bonds were listed on the London Stock Exchange and were recognized by the NASDAQ Sustainable Bond Network.

Additionally, in March 2020, the African Development Bank received the 2020 Bond Award from Environmental Finance for the success of the first social impact bond issued in the Norwegian market and the success of the bank’s first financial transaction (N1 billion) in the Norwegian krone.

The bank has successfully moved to LIBOR, and has entered the Global Green Bond Initiative at Dubai COP28, which aims to provide technical assistance to promote the African green bond market.

The African Development Bank has gained global recognition for the multilateral development bank’s world’s first hybrid capital issue and has become a pioneer in innovative sustainable finance.

The awards and prizes constitute a global recognition of the sustainable efforts made by the banking group, which has become a bank that provides solutions to Africa and provides a positive affirmation of the institutional operational strategy.

The Bank’s Technology for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT) program helps 12 million farmers access climate-dependent agricultural technologies such as wheat, rice and corn, and was praised by actors and leaders in the seed industry at the annual Seed Connect Africa 2024 conference.

To address the impact of the war between Russia and Ukraine on Africa’s food security, the bank has set up an emergency food production facility in Africa with a budget of USD 1.5 billion, with 20 million farmers producing 38 million tonnes of food, with an estimated value of USD 12 billion.

The African Development Fund has established the Climate Action Window with its first funding of US$429 million to enhance climate resilience in the most vulnerable African countries.

Over the past decade, banks have increased their capital from USD 93 billion in 2015 to USD 318 billion today.

“In fact, we have been the only AAA rated financial institution on the continent for the last nine years when I was the president of a bank,” Adesina said.

Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, president of the bank, has been awarded the prestigious “Nigerian Diaspora Global Icon” award along with key figures in Nigeria and is ranked as one of the most influential people in the world and/or Africa by well-known magazines such as Forbe and Time.

That being said, perceptions of banks’ actions are first and foremost from the voices of countless beneficiaries whose living conditions have fundamentally transformed by bold and innovative strategies focusing on what is most important.
