White Lotus star Amy Lowood called out Saturday Night Live (SNL) sketches, using her exaggerated prosthetic leg “deprecating and unfair.”
The British actress said the US comedy program “punched down” her, suggesting that the sketch was misogynistic.
In a series of Instagram posts, Wood wrote that while he was happy to tease him “when smart and cheerful,” he said, “smart, subtle and not very cheap.”
Wood, 31, said he received a “apology from SNL” after sharing his criticism. The BBC contacted broadcaster NBC about the response.
The Manchester-born actress’ role in White Lotus, in the third series following a group of guests at the resort, attracted media attention surrounding what she calls “big gap teeth.”
The SNL sketch, which aired this week, imagined President Donald Trump and his top team spending time in a fictional hotel.
Wood’s character Chelsea was portrayed by cast member Sarah Sherman using prominent accents and fake teeth.
At one point, referring to the actress’s teeth, she asks: “Fluoride? What is it?”
When Wood bursts into the Netflix sex education screen, she says she “not thin skin” and realizes that SNL is a “caricature.”
“But the joke was about fluoride,” she wrote Sunday.
“I have big gaps, not big teeth.”
“The rest of the skit was punching up,” Wood added.
She said she “hate the concept” rather than “hate” Sarah Sherman.
Wood also shared comments by an unnamed user describing the sketch as “sharp and funny” before taking “a squealing turn to misogyny in the 1970s.”
“This sums up my views,” the actress added.
She also criticised the Shaman accent, writing, “We respect accuracy even if it’s mean.”
Wood wrote that she had received “thousands of messages” after she shared her post and agreed to her, and she was pleased that she had “said something.”
Speaking to GQ Magazine last week, Wood said the conversation surrounding her teeth “has made me feel a little sad because I can’t talk about my work.”
“It really makes me happy that it symbolizes rebellion and freedom, but there are limits,” she said.
