
The participation of local officials and more than 100 Arkansas Institute of Technology student volunteers highlighted ATU’s 2024 Constitutional Day Compliance on Tuesday, September 17th.
The annual US Constitution measurements at Arkansas Institute of Technology were made at Hindsman Tower. Readers included Pope County Judge Ben Cross, Mayor of Russellville Fred Teague, and Dr. Provostau Dolfosantos, executive vice president of ATU Academic Affairs.
Dr. Jeffrey Pearson, an associate professor of history at ATU, took the lead in reading the US Constitution. Megan Bell, ATU coordinator for civic and community engagement and leadership development, organized the voter registration table as part of the event.
Dr. Debra Murphy, an associate professor of ATU curriculum and instruction, and more than 20 ATU students provided Constitutional Day learning activities to third and fourth grade students at Dwight Elementary School in Russellville.
Meanwhile, ATU political science professor Dr. Michael Rogers and 20 more ATU students arrived at 400 eighth graders at Russellville Middle School in US Constitution lessons.
The US Constitution was adopted by a Constitutional Convention held on September 17, 1787 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
In 2004, Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia defended a new law that designated September 17th as Constitutional Day each year. Public schools and higher education institutions across the United States must provide educational programs on documentary on Constitutional Day.
