More rain will fall in NSW over the next 24 hours, Premier says

Chris Mins is up now and he says the weather is still unpredictable:

Weather patterns are still somewhat unpredictable. Rainfall is expected to increase in the next 24 hours.

It is expected that there will be more rain the day before. Now we don’t want to warn people, but that’s certainly something that everyone is watching very well the next day.

There’s some good news from Lismore. The only evacuation notice still being evacuated is Lismore North. As soon as it gets safe, SES knows to lift that evacuation order and bring people home as quickly as possible.

The North River has about 9,800 homes and businesses under the age of 10,000, which still lacks power. This is down from 43,000 homes in the past three days.

Peter Dutton responds to fundraising criticism

Speaking about Sky News, Peter Dutton is working on the criticism he has copied for attending a fundraiser hosted by Sydney billionaire Justin Hems before the Cyclone hit.

He said:

It’s not the party, it’s a fundraising dinner, the prime minister, and I’m currently doing them all across the country.

I received my morning briefing and went down. There was diary commitment such as lunch with the archbishop and many other meetings in Sydney otherwise.

I went back to voters on my first flight on Wednesday morning and headed home, but the event hadn’t started before, but didn’t start until Friday.

People who use it for political gain in the age of natural disasters, frankly, I think it’s a poorer remorse for them than I do. I think people are aware of that.

The party/fundraiser took place at Hems’ $100 million Vocluse Mansion. Daily Tele cost $25,000 to tickets for the event. Just for reference, the median AUS wage is around $65,000.

Minns Adamant NSW: “Not in a position to run a permanent evacuation centre”

I can’t convey the tone on my blog, but when he was asked a follow-up question about the center, Mins got frustrated:

While the evacuation centre will not be closed while there are still unresolved evacuation orders, we are not in a position to operate a permanent evacuation centre once the evacuation order is lifted. That’s very clear.

Evacuation centres “are not a long-term solution to homelessness,” Mins says.

Mins is backed up and he was asked about the closure of the evacuation centre.

It’s a permanent problem we don’t have. There is a real, pressing housing problem, especially on the North Coast. I think the Kitagawa region is one of the highest homeless regions in the state, if not the country.

He said the government committed $5 billion to social housing in its final budget.

Evacuation centres are not a long-term solution for the homelessness in Kitagawa. And I just want to be really transparent and clear. They can’t work longer than they intended.

More rain will fall over the next few days, Bomb says

Jane Golding in BOM is rising:

The remains of the tropical cyclone Alfred still sit in southeast Queensland and northeast New South Wales, and expects more commonly rainfall over several days in the northern coastal areas of New South Wales.

But the risk of heavy totals is really this morning and early afternoon. That’s some good news.

She says there are warnings that thunderstorms will continue to appear today on the coast and the area and the western slopes of Lismore.

For emergency assistance in NSW, please call 132 500

Damien Johnson, New South Wales’ Deputy Emergency Services Commissioner, is on top right now. He has some numbers for us:

Over the past 24 hours, there have been 635 incidents and over 1,100 calls for support. Unfortunately, we have received 18 more flood rescues in the last 24 hours. The masses and the majority of the community are paying attention to the warnings. thank you.

Currently, about 10,200 and 4,500 homes are receiving emergency warnings across the state. There are also around 1,800 residents currently in quarantine. They may be separated from the food supply from medicines and other important requirements. If you need assistance, call 132 500.

There are currently 135 warnings statewide, of which 23 are emergency warnings.

Mins says NSW owes “a great debt of gratitude” to SES

Mins says SES learned from the 2022 flood. They say they have been criticized by the Lismore community for shedding light on the ground. This time, he says, they were strong from the start.

Mins:

We owed them a great debt of gratitude. And I’m sure the North River will show you their hospitality when you see them on the street in the next few days, and when they’re done with their shift, they’ll show you their hospitality when they buy coffee or beer, but that was a great effort. I think it is very clear that SES has loudly cleared its message and learning from 2022.

Thanks to SES, all the emergency services, police, fire, rescue, paramedics, RFS and RFS deployed in the New South Wales area are amazing.

When the threat ends, the evacuation centre will be closed, Mins says

Mins asks everyone to be careful to avoid and report power lines in case they are still alive.

He also says they will close the evacuation centre:

I want to apologise in advance, but when the immediate threat of a storm is no longer felt by the community, I have to draw a very clear and understood line in relation to evacuation centres. We will not continue to operate them and will close the evacuation centre as the day wears them.

I don’t want to disappoint people when the government announces that we are not continuing their business after the threat has been released within those communities.

Lismore companies are preparing to open again, Mins says

Mins says Lismore companies are starting to open their doors and prepare for deals.

The area has 2,000 essential energy workers, many of whom were pre-located before the tropical cyclone hit the area, and did an incredible job connecting the community as quickly as possible.

I understand from a friend of Kitagawa that many companies in Lismore are opening their doors and preparing to trade as quickly as possible. This is great news. I can’t wait to see these communities get back up as quickly as possible.

You can’t do that without electricity. I don’t want to emphasize how complicated and difficult the essential energy that the task was to restore its power.

A study finds Australians’ life satisfaction at the lowest since Covid

The latest Australian National University Election Monitoring Survey Survey shows that one in three Australians report economic stress, a similar proportion of people believe their lives have been deteriorating over the past year, pushing life satisfaction to the lowest level since the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown.

In addition to this, more than half of Australians believed that their children would suffer from worsening lives.

Nicholas Biddle, Professor ANU, said:

Everyone can see the young struggle for Australians to step into the real estate market.

Pessimism has reduced trust in government agencies and has been at the lowest point of trust in the federal government since the 2019-2020 Black Summer Bushfire.

A third of Australians expressed confidence in the federal government from half after the previous election.

Two in three respondents were satisfied with democracy, but this did not reflect “deep dissatisfaction” among the economically emphasized groups, the report warned.

“For low-income households, renting is essentially impossible,” says the economist.

In a rigorous rental report, Angus Moore, senior economist at Proptrack, said:

Australian tenants are facing the toughest situation in at least 18 years. Households across the income distribution can afford to rent the minimum share of advertised rentals since at least 2008.

The current attractive rental affordable condition is significant deterioration from conditions before and after the pandemic. Rents have increased by 48% since before the pandemic, but typical household income has only increased by 19% over the same period.

For low-income households, renting is essentially impossible. This highlights how important Commonwealth Rent Assistance and Community Housing is for low-income Australian households.

Silver lining for tenants is that conditions appear to be improving. Rental availability is still limited, but it is beginning to increase, and the pace of rent growth is slowing. Rents are likely to grow again this year, but we expect the pace of growth to continue to be slacked.

The affordable prices for rentals reach record range

Affordable prices for Australian rentals have fallen new records, according to the new Rea Group Rental Aldapalability Report.

The report found that typical income households making around $116,000 can only rent 36% of rentals advertised between July and December 2024.

A typical income household spending 25% of their income will only earn 36% of rentals advertised on Realestate.com.au between July and December 2024.

For households with the 30th percentile of income earning around $70,000, renting (just 2%) would not have been affordable between July and December 2024.
