Behind the whistle, former Premier League referee Chris Foy chooses a key match decision from the weekend’s EFL action.
Behind Whistle, it aims to give supporters of the EFL Clubs insight into decision-making considerations and clarification of specific calls to understand how gaming laws are interpreted.
As part of Sky Sports’ regular features following the end of Match Day, Foy comes here to run some judgement questions in the EFL…
Bristol City 1-1 Hull City
Joan Pedro was sent just 96 seconds after scoring against Bristol City.
Incident: Possible Red Card, Serious Foul Play (Hul City)
Decided: Red Card (Hul City)
Foy said: “For me, this straight red is shown based on the lack of control over this airborne challenge.
“When you watch it first it looks like Hull City No. 12 clouds his tackle and catches the enemy late, but the replays suggest that it’s actually worse than that.

“When he enters the challenge, hull number 12 is in the air and charges with both feet. He is not in control of his body at that point. The speed and power of the challenge also puts the enemy’s safety at risk.
“The referee correctly identifies this issue as a serious foul play and swinging red cards around.”
Norwich City 1-1 Oxford United
See why Oxford’s goal against Norwich wasn’t offside.
Incident: Goal score, Possible offside (Oxford United)
Decided: Goal award (Oxford United)
Foy said: “This is a great moderator because the judge and assistant judge communicate brilliantly and understand exactly what happened.
“It is clear that Oxford United scorer No. 9 is in the offside position, but if the attacker receives the ball directly from the throw-in, there is no offside attack.

“Since a throw-in does not go directly to the attacker, the referee and assistant referee work effectively, firstly identifying that Oxford United No. 47 does not touch the ball. Then it is Norwich No. 3 that plays the ball repulsive from the other defender, Norwich No. 20.
“Therefore, Oxford United No. 9 will not commit offside offense and the goal will be awarded correctly.”
Peterborough United 1-1 Wycombe Wanderers
Should Peterborough striker Ricky Jade Jones be booked for a dive with Wycombe?
Incident: Possible Penalty (Peterborough United)
Decided: No penalty (Peterborough United)
Foy said: “It’s good to see that the judges here have not properly identified Peterborough United No. 17 contacts.

“It is a very good decision from the judge to clearly identify that the goalkeeper has not come into contact with his challenge, but Peterborough United No. 17’s actions are simulations.
Tranmere Rovers 2-1 Bromley
Was Tranmere Rovers lucky to avoid a penalty against Bromley?
Incident: Possible penalty, foul (Bromley)
Decisions: No penalty (Bromley)
Foy said: “I have sympathy for the defenders in these types of incidents, but for me, Transia Rovers has been fortunate.
Highlights from two Skybet League matches between Tranmia and Bromley.
“When Tranmere No 2 goes to clean up the ball right within the penalty area, he is piped into the ball by Bromley’s attacker. Instead of playing the ball, the Transmair guy catches the attacker’s foot and inadvertently trips him.
“I think the contacts are enough to ensure that players go down. In my eyes, the right decision here is to be awarded a penalty.”
