Ben Whitaker faces Liam Cameron for the second time after the appeal of last year’s controversy. Experts are giving their opinions on Live on Sky Sports, a Sunday night rematch.
Anthony Jarrdo (former world title challenger):
Ben Whitaker will be better this time. If he is himself, I think he is gorgeous, [he’ll win]. In the first fight, that would be difficult because many people say it’s a policeman and Cameron actually comes to win the fight.
He, like Naseem Hamed, thrives in showboating. He is not a naseem hamed, but Naseem Hamed thrived on being a naseem hamed. What you come across as showboating and dance is that is part of the style.
So when he tries to get serious it’s another fighter. That night, a completely different fighter for him and afterwards Cameron’s style was all wrong.
Whitaker says he even learned from the first fight that he looks good on the ring canvas, claiming that Cameron wasted his best opportunity to defeat him
Callum Smith (WBO interim champion):
The first one was a good fight while it continued. Along with Cameron, he’s tough and a game and he’s going to give it all.
I think we need to see a better version of Whittaker. We know he has the ability, he didn’t show it that night.
I think he will put the box in the box and use his abilities to not involve him, perhaps take a safety first point victory and put it in bed to continue his career.
Cameron has something to say about it and enters there with confidence after the first fight.
Whitaker and Cameron head straight to their heads after public training and shared a chilly showdown
Wayne Elcock (former British champion):
Who knows what will happen if Whitaker gets caught up in the trench again? Cameron then managed to pull it apart.
You can’t see him stop Liam because you can see him as a tough kid. If you get into that fight, I think you’re going to play his game. He has all the tools to unlock Cameron and make it easier for the night if he’s using everything.
Tyler Denny (former European champion):
I’ll choose Ben. I don’t think it’s as close as the first one. The first one was a close, competitive battle, don’t misunderstand me, Liam might get even stronger. But I think Ben shows his talent. But it’s a good fight because no one knows. A good fight that everyone wants to see.
Speaking on Toe2toe, Matthew Macklin, Barry Jones and Wayne Elcock discussed how Whittaker approaches the rematch
Adam Azim (undefeated former European champion):
Ben Whittaker is back, delivering great performances, playing great fights, winning and styling Liam Cameron. Liam Cameron, I’m a fan of him now. I respect him. I respect both fighters. I think if Ben changes his trainer he will win the fight. He’s away from distraction and away from all the toxic comments he’s getting. I feel he can do well, I think he can beat him. Although I admire Liam Cameron. He is a dangerous fighter and he is going to give it. He aims for that.
Lee Cutler (former English Champion):
I think Ben Whitaker is going to put him outboxed, keep it for a long time. I think it will last for a long time. He’s going to go to Cameron’s exit. He knows he won’t be drawn into.
It would be a more thoughtful battle from Ben Whitaker.
Whitaker said he would give Cameron the microphone if he won their fight.
Shane McGuigan (Top Trainer):
I don’t think it was the best Ben Whitaker in the first fight. How does he cope with the pace? He has great skills, Ben. He lacks that one-punch knockout power. Preparation is everything.
I think he will beat him because he has to go back to basics right away.
Whitaker jokingly threatened Cameron with an egg while “gloves off”
Frank Warren (Cameron’s promoter):
Because he’s confident, I’m confident and I thought when he left the ring it had turned into that fight in a few rounds before that strange incident.
Ben was having a bit of a struggle, that’s what it looks like to me. But they are both very confident, so it would be a good fight.
He seems to feel that our man is very capable as well as Ben, but he has his number. It would be interesting to see what happens after 5 or 6 rounds. He is capable, he is very confident in the fight, and I think he will give him even more confidence.
