Hundreds of jihadists simultaneously attacked northern Burkina Faso on Sunday, killing dozens of people – soldiers and civilians.
Members of the Al-Qaeda partnership group for the support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) conducted simultaneous attacks in military dismantling and police positions in towns in the north and other towns north of the country.
Extreme violence
The assailants have arrived “hundreds” of motorbikes and vehicles, surrounding the town, with security and local sources telling French news agency AFP.
There is no official death toll, but witnesses told the RFI that the attack was extreme violence and that dozens were killed. At least 20 civilians were to be buried on Sunday, with others being to be buried on Monday.
Jihadists took over the camp and plundered it, attacked parts of the town, burned homes and paraded the streets.
The military junta, which took over in 2022, has not responded to the attack that took place when junta leader Ibrahim Traore returned to the capital Ouagadougou after visiting Moscow to discuss cooperation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The regime rarely communicates about attacks and regularly claims it has regained territory from the jihadists.
The country has long endured attacks by armed groups associated with the armed groups of al-Qaeda and the Islamic state. Additionally, more than 26,000 civilians and soldiers have been killed, with more than half of them tracking victims of the conflict over the past three years.
