ARLINGTON, Va. — Washington Capitals defensive man Martin Felbury has been out for the rest of the team’s playoff run after undergoing knee surgery.
The capital said Tuesday that Felbury had surgery on a meniscus that was torn in his right knee on Monday. Fehervary twisted his right foot last week trying to block a shot in Washington’s penultimate game of regular season.
“It’s a huge loss for our team. I really feel it for him,” coach Spencer Carberry said. “My heart hurts for him because he is a dishonorable hero to our team. If you know the capital of Washington, you’re around our team and you see our team, he’s an unnoticed person and the rest of the hockey world probably doesn’t pay much attention, but he’s a big part of our team.”
Fehervary skated for 19 minutes in the capital game. The 25-year-old from Slovakia also blocked 150 shots.
“It’s tough,” said defensive man Matt Roy. “It’s clearly a huge loss for us. He’s had a very good year and is competing hard for us, so he’ll definitely be overlooked.”
Fehervary, a second-round pick for the Capitals in 2018, has 22 goals and 53 assists in 299 career games, and has a career-high career game with assists (20) and points (25) this season.
Alexander Alexayev, who had been healthy scars for most of the season, took up Felbury’s place in the first round of Game 1 lineup with the Montreal Canadiens. The Capitals beat the Canadiens 3-2 in overtime, with Alex Ovechkin’s second goal in the game.
Alexeyev required “critical dental work” after sticking it on his face later in the third season from Jake Evans, but Carbery is hoping to play in Game 2 on Wednesday night.
