Edwards was fired in 2016 and won both World Cups as Ashes as British captain, replaced by Knight.
Now Knight has been fired but shows her desire to continue as a player. Edwards, 45, said he had not been consulted with a decision to remove the Knight.
“She sets such high standards. She is the ultimate expert and what we need around the English team right now,” Edwards said.
“She plays just like she plays. It was tough to see ashes. It was tough to see ashes because it was on her.
To get a job in England, Edwards left all roles in domestic cricket, including her post as head coach for the Mumbai Indians in the Women’s Premier League. While he was the British coach, Lewis was in charge of Up Warriorz in the same competition.
England appoints a new national selector and a new captain. This said Edwards will introduce for the series with the West Indies in May.
Knight’s assistant captain Nat Cyber Brandt previously said he was interested in the job, but spinner Charlie Dean admitted that he would not refuse if he approached it.
Edwards, who captained England more than 200 times, said he was looking for someone who would lead “head-front in everything he does, someone who respects his current playgroup.” Edwards also said England has one captain rather than splitting the roles across the format.
Edwards was appointed after a review of Ashes led by Jonathan Finch, director of female cricket Clare Connor and performance director.
Connor himself was the captain of England who won the ashes and confirmed that Edwards was given the job without a formal process.
In 2018, the English and Wales Cricket Committees pledged to adopt the Rooney Rule. This interviewed at least one applicant from black, Asian or minority ethical backgrounds about all coaching roles on the national team. It was not used to appoint Edwards.
“In these specific situations, there’s a standard ahead of me, so I didn’t think there would be an open recruitment process or benefit anyone,” Connor said.
“I was very, very clear in the world of coaching that I would have been able to play this role. Charlotte Edwards is the only planet that can chock every box to the extent she can.”
Connor also chose to introduce internal or independent leadership for reviews. When asked if that was what Connor and Finch were praised for “marking their homework,” Connor said: “I understand that perspective.
“I will be responsible for the board of women’s cricket in England, and I am very confident in the steps we are taking and the way we set up a team for success, that is the job I will pay to do.
“I was not under the illusion.
