At least 33 deaths have been recorded after flooding and erosion caused by heavy rains in Kinshasa, Radio Okapi reports. However, the death toll remains tentative.
Mont-Ngafula, Ngaliema, Barumbu, Limete, Matete and Masina have been reported to be the worst municipalities.
“A crisis management force has been established under the supervision of the Ministry of Home Affairs. We have decided to implement the evacuation plan immediately, mobilize intervention teams and provide reserve support, including provision of temporary shelters,” the government’s statement said in response.
Interior Minister Jack Maine Shabani called him the Director General of the Army, Immigration Directorate, Waterways and Customs, ensuring transport of people living in submerged areas to identified receiving sites.
Four reception sites are available.
Lumumba Institute, where 115 families are supported;
Ndjili’s Kitomesa, 100 families supported,
Kim Wentza, houses 70 families;
Already operational Tata Raphaƫl Stadium.
The Army deployed vehicles to transport people stuck 24 hours a day on Lumumba Boulevard, between Matete Bridge and District 1.
