Nairobi – The African Cup of Nations under the age of 20 is at risk following reports of Ivory Coast withdrawal as host.
The tournament was set to kickoff from April 26th to May 18th, but the Iborians reportedly withdraw due to logistic hitches related to holding the competition.
The report shows that the country is telling the same thing to the Continental Governing Body, the African Football Union (CAF), which is scheduled to announce the decision.
The Ivory Coast was the host of last year’s Africa Cup of Nations, winning after beating Nigeria 2-1 in the final.
They also host many World Cup qualifiers for countries that do not have world-class venues in their home soil.
The latest was last week’s World Cup qualifiers between the Gambia and Kenya, at Abidjan’s Alasan Watara Stadium in Iboria’s capital.
Kenya’s National Under 20 side, the junior star was one of 12 teams competing in the age-grade competition.
The charges of tournament debut Salim Babu were to launch a campaign in Sierra Leone and Group C on May 1st.
Other Group C opponents include defending champions Senegal and Zambia.
Junior Stars are training at Tika as they are ready for combat.
