His party has announced that former Credit Suisse director, Tillane Thiam, will run for president in the upcoming elections of Côte de Ivoire. Thiam did not oppose it in the Ivory Coast’s primary Democrats after his only rival, former trade minister Jean Louis Biron, withdrew from the race.
The 62-year-old waived his French citizenship in February to compete in the October election. Under the Constitution, all presidential candidates must retain only Koibori citizenship.
Thiam spent the last 20 years abroad and has worked for major companies such as Aviva, Prudential and Credit Suisse. He resigned from Credit Suisse in 2020 after a spy scandal.
He is expected to oppose current president Alassane Ouattara, who is set to seek a fourth term, and former President Laurent Gbagbo, who was acquitted of crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court in 2019.
