All previous evidence suggests that Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota was driving when a car crashed on a Spanish highway, and police say he likely had speeded.
The 28-year-old Liverpool was killed along with his 25-year-old brother Andre Silva. Their Lamborghini car was suspected of having tires blown out in northwest Zamora earlier last Thursday.
Spanish Guardia Civic Police said at the time it was apparently overtaking the A52 highway near Palacios de Sanabria when the car left the road and fell into flames.
“Everything shows the possibility of excessive speed exceeding the road speed limits. [highway]”The local traffic police in Zamora said.
Police studied the mark left behind by one of the Lamborghini tires and said “all tests performed so far indicate that the driver of the crashed vehicle is Diogojota.”
Expert reports are prepared for the courts regarding the accident, and their investigation is understood to have been made more complicated by the strength of the fire that nearly completely destroyed the car.
The accident came 11 days after Jota married his long-term partner, Root Caldoso, in Portugal. The couple had three children.
The brothers were heading towards the port of Santander in Spain, so Jota was able to return to Liverpool for pre-season training.
Their funeral took place over the weekend in his hometown of Gondomar near Porto.
The tire mark reportedly looked about 100m (330 feet) from the moment of impact.
There was a suggestion that asphalt on the road was uneven at the location of the crash fall, but police told Spanish media that it should be possible to drive above the 120km/h (75mph) speed limit, rather than “black spots.”
