On the night that introduced the nerves and victory mentality of steel, 16-year-old Emile Witbuy appeared as South African heartbeat and hero, leading Egypt to a breathtaking 4-3 comeback victory at Casablanca’s Total Energy U17 Africa Cup of Nations.

“It was a tough match, but we showed real characters to go back and win,” said Witbuy, who was later named to Man of the Match. “I’m happy with our first game – the team remains composed in tough moments, which gives us confidence in the future.”

Witbooi has adjusted his comeback beautifully and played with him matured well beyond his age. From fully weighted assists to decisive winners, Cape Town City FC midfielder ruled the procedure with vision, calmness and accuracy.

Witbooi steals the show

The Kimberly-born playmaker pushed his authority early in the match, offering pinpoint left foot assist for the South African opener. But his very important winner sealed his night, and the game in an epic way.

“I love taking the ball, sorting out the plays and helping my teammates get into the right position,” said Witbooi, softly speaking. “We remained calm and took our chances. This victory reflects our way of thinking – we will never give up.”

Leader of height, not size

At just 1.60m tall, Witbooi may not stand behind his opponents, but his football IQ, ability to settle under pressure and determine the rhythm of the game has made him the most influential person on the pitch.

His leadership qualities were clear when he gathered his teammates as he chased 3-1. As the North Africans were being pushed hard, Witbuy gently pulled the midfield strings to help South Africa return.

Statement Performance

The victory not only gave South Africa three key points, but also sent an overwhelming message to the rest of the tournament. Bafana’s U17 isn’t just for competition.

And at the heart of their campaign, Witbooi may be. Its incredible opening performance suggests that the youngster may be one of the competitive standouts.
