Addis Ababa – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) calls for bold changes in global climate policy and energy investment in the fourth partnership of Green Growth and the Global Goal 2030 (P4G) Summit.
The summit, held yesterday in Hanoi, Vietnam, was under the theme of “Sustainable, People-centered Green Transition.”
At the same time, he confirmed that Vietnamese counterpart, Prime Minister Mumi Qin, would soon pay for an official visit to Ethiopia.
Addressing world leaders and representatives at the summit, Prime Minister Abiy outlined three key elements to accelerating the climate. We will ensure appropriate and predictable climate financing, dramatically increase Africa’s global energy investment share, and take urgent measures to protect nature by overturning biodiversity losses and worsening land.
He stressed that Africa currently receives only 2% of global energy investment, and argued that if sustainable development and ecosystem conservation are to be achieved, this should rise to at least 20% by 2030.
The Prime Minister also highlighted Ethiopia’s flagship environmental campaign, Green Legacy Initiative, as an example of grassroots climate action worthy of international support. “Ensuring an equitable interest sharing mechanism for the local community is not fair, it is essential for lasting change,” he said in a post shared through official social media channels.
The summit – the first multilateral high-level conference on green growth and sustainable development that Vietnam has ever hosted – attracted over 1,000 participants from over 40 countries and international organizations. Among the participants were the UN vice-general Amina J. Mohammed, Laos Prime Minister Sonexaisypandonne and Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister Nes Saboen.
Vietnam’s Prime Minister, Phạm Minhhính, has focused on the transformational potential of the P4G platform since its launch in Copenhagen in 2018, highlighting the need to address challenges such as climate change, natural disasters, pollution, pandemics and demographic shifts. “Human factors are centers, subjects, goals, driving forces, resources for greening processes and sustainable development,” he said.
A bystander at the summit, Prime Minister Abiy held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Chien, marking his first visit to Vietnam by the head of the Ethiopia government since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1976. The leader oversaw the signing of major agreements to protect two memorandums to understand trade and education cooperation, and to protect the Aviation Association’s cooperation to protect the cooperation of aBa supervisors. “Our discussions have paved a new pathway for cooperation and strengthened the foundation of a lasting partnership,” Prime Minister Abiy said. “We look forward to welcoming Prime Minister Qian to Ethiopia soon. This is a visit to mark a new chapter in our relationship.”
Prime Minister Abiy also met with Tôlâm, the general secretary of the Vietnam Communist Party, for discussions focusing on governance, development and cooperation from the party to the party. The conference strengthened strong ideological and strategic ties between the Ethiopian Prosperity Party and the Communist Party of Vietnam.
As Ethiopia and Vietnam prepare to mark 50 years of diplomatic relations in 2026, the two countries appear to be poised to turn long-standing goodwill into concrete collaborations, particularly in the areas of trade, investment, aviation, education and sustainable development.
The Summit Agenda has seen high climate change and global inequality, and has gained remarkable momentum in Hanoi in pursuit of a more equitable green transition backed by Africa-led initiatives and leadership.
