Fat Joe laments the loss of a woman he called his world – his mother, Marie del Calman Cartagena, has passed away.
The rapper posted a tribute on social media on Saturday, posting a heartfelt message and a series of photos honoring her life.

Joe reflected on his mother’s dedication to her family and community. He says that because of her deep love for her neighbors, she chose to live in the project for years despite his financial success.

In an emotional post, Joe says she died of “a wounded heart.” Her death comes months after her husband Ernest passed away in February. “My father wanted her with him. I tried everything humanly possible,” Joe wrote.

Over the years, Fat Joe has spoken about his close bond with his mother. In January he celebrated her birthday by calling himself a “mom boy,” a cancer-beating warrior and praised him for standing by his side throughout every chapter of his life.
