Football star Joe Thompson has passed away after a long battle with cancer, his wife confirmed this week. He was 36 years old.
Chantelle Thompson shared devastating news on Instagram… Her “brave and brave” husband died at home surrounded by his family.
“It was a long battle, he fought with his strength, and he did things his own way!!” Chantel said.
“He chose his own path, walked every step of his life with courage and pride, and was still there for many others every day, approaching God. He kept his grip on future plans to continue his legacy, but now it’s time for him to rest and watch over us from heaven.”
This was the third battle against a soccer player’s illness. He broke Hodgkin’s lymphoma twice before being diagnosed again last April. He eventually reached stage 4 and spread to his lungs.
“He knows that everyone will be deeply overlooked,” Chantel said, “and without his infectious energy the world wouldn’t be the same.”
Thompson joined the Manchester United youth team in 1998 and began playing football when he played with James Chester and Danny Drinkwater.

The midfielder became professional in 2006…and he played for several teams, including Carlisle United and Rochdale.
After resigning in 2019, he became a motivational speaker and served as an ambassador at United.
“The man who represented the value of our club,” United said.
“The warm personality, who had a deep connection with United since he was young, is what he thinks of Joe’s family and friends during this difficult time.”
He leaves behind his wife and two children.
