The Ghanaian Power Company (ECG) has begun construction of new distribution lines to improve the power supply of several communities within Atwi McWanWoma constituency in Greater Kumasi.

According to the ECG, the project (currently 40% complete) is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. It is estimated that the cost will be GH¢2,287,841.31.

George Amoah, general manager of ECG for the Ashanti West region, revealed that the initiative will include the creation of a new 11kV feeder from the Kumasi Asekyem primary substation.

This feeder is expected to ease the load on existing Cocoben and Ampereum feeders. Once completed, communities such as Ahenema Kokoben, Trede, Heman, Darko, Ampataia, Ampabame, Kotwi, Pakyi, Bebu, Brofoyedru, Bekwame and the surrounding areas will see significant improvements in power reliability.

The scope of the project includes the installation of 85 new high-tensile poles, 11kV headgears and new conductor strings, among other materials.

Amore emphasized that the project is in line with the mission of the ECG to provide quality, reliable and safe electricity services to support socioeconomic growth and development in Ghana.

He noted that rapid infrastructure development at Amperum Enclave, spurred by ongoing road projects and expansion of real estate, requires upgrades to alleviate pressure on existing lines and meet future demands.

Amoah has listed the key benefits of the new feeder to address system losses, increased reliability, increased customer satisfaction, increased voltage levels, and low voltage issues and operational efficiency and flexibility issues in affected regions, allowing ECG to power through four different distribution lines.

The general manager described the initiative as an important step in providing reliable and quality power to attract businesses and boost local economic activity.

He also said similar projects are being implemented across the Ashanti region to further improve the distribution and reliability of electricity.

Amoah advised customers to refrain from illegal connections, pay their bills promptly to support ECG’s efforts, and to take advantage of ECG’s cashless payment system by downloading ECG PowerApp from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store, or by dialing Dial *226# to pay the bills before ECG civil servants make advance visits.
