Hundreds of workers took a strike at a hotel near the Las Vegas strip early Friday morning.
Around 700 hospitality workers left work at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas as contract negotiations between the hotel and the culinary coalition collapsed.
The Cooking Union said Friday’s action was the first open-end strike in 22 years. Hotel Culinary Union members also took part in the 48-hour strike in May, the first in 22 years.
“The Virgin Las Vegas contract expired on June 1, 2023, and workers are fighting for new contracts that will ensure a better future for their families. As such, the Culinary Union will call for a strike in Virgin Las Vegas on Friday, November 15th, urging Las Vegas locals and customers not to cross the strike line in solidarity with workers, Fox Business.

The Cooking Union is Nevada’s largest with over 60,000 workers. The union said other Las Vegas hotel workers were not called to strike.
Pappageorge said the proposal for Virgin Las Vegas is “miles away” from what the union hopes for, and the committee unanimously refused to settle the second-degree contract as it is a shame for all workers.
The union said Pickett workers will be outside the hotel 24 hours a day until the strike is over.

“I don’t know how different we are,” Virgin Las Vegas Server Deanna Vann told Fox 5, another Las Vegas hotel worker who successfully negotiated a new deal. “We’re not like the other casinos on the strip, it’s the same as Rio and Westgate. A lot of the things that aren’t on the strip are unions and they signed contracts, great things compared to what they’re trying to offer us.”

A Canadian guest in Virgin Las Vegas said he already noticed the difference in service at the hotel.

“This morning we ordered breakfast – room service – they said it wasn’t available,” Lance Richards told Fox5.
Fox Business reached out to Virgin Las Vegas for comment.
Virgin Las Vegas pointed to the latest statement accusing Fox 5 of “malicious negotiations.”

“When we finished our latest meeting on July 11th, the ball was in the union’s courthouse,” the hotel said this week. “We didn’t hear from the Union until November 8th. After already setting a deadline for the strike on November 15th. After waiting several months to return to the table in response to the June proposal, their constructive approach and malicious negotiations were another disappointment.”
