The missiles collided with Pakistan-controlled locations in Kashmir and the country’s East Punjab province.
India has fired missiles in several locations in Pakistan and its administrator Kashmir, the government said, and Pakistan has pledged to respond to the attack.
The strike comes amid tensions among nuclear-armed neighbours after last month’s fatal attack on Indian-controlled Kashmir tourists that New Delhi denounced Islamabad.
Several explosions were heard early on Wednesday in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir’s capital Muzaffarabad, Reuters news agency reported.
According to three Pakistani security officials cited by the Associated Press, the missiles appeared in Pakistan-controlled locations in Kashmir and the country’s East Punjab province.
Indian troops have attacked the terrorist infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir, which was occupied by the ordered Pakistan and Pakistan,” the Indian government said in a statement.
“Our actions are inherently focused, measured and inequality. Pakistan’s military facilities are not targeted. India has demonstrated considerable restraint in the way they select and execute targets.”
Pakistani forces said at least two people were killed and 12 people were injured in the Indian attack.
A Pakistani military spokesman told broadcaster Geo that at least five locations have been attacked, including two mosques. He said Pakistan’s reaction was ongoing, without providing details.
Reported from Islamabad, Kamalhaider of Al Jazeera said Muzafarabad and Kotori cities were one of the targets of Indian strikes.
The development comes amid growing tensions among nuclear-armed neighbours in the aftermath of an attack on Hindu tourists in India-controlled Pahargam, Kashmir last month.
India has accused Pakistan of the violence that 26 men were killed and vowed to respond. Pakistan denied that it had something to do with the murder.
After the Indian strike, the Indian military said in an X post early on Wednesday that “justice will be provided.”
Nitasha Kaur, director of the Center for Democracy Studies, said the strike was “very concerned.”
“Another one of the worst affected people is Kasimiris, the locals, who are caught up in the rivals between India and Pakistan, and between the attitudes and attitudes of their owners and rivals,” Kaur told Al Jazeera.
Still, she said the escalation “is not so surprising, because within India, there is increasing pressure within the country due to a more militaristic response, especially given the fact that nationalist governments are in power.
“In that sense, sadly, this is a countdown to a bigger escalation and hopefully we don’t go far beyond what has already happened with these strikes,” Kaur added.
