Top seed Sabalenka has come out of the recession this year to bring some of her best tennis to the California desert, but her form was unraveled in the finals, and she missed the opportunity she missed.
Andreeva had lost to Sabalenka twice this year, but the pattern seemed to be repeated as the hard-hitting Belarusian sent a backhand winner in the Break Point in the fourth game.
Visibly annoyed Andreva sent a shot into the net on the eighth breakpoint, but regained her composure in the second set, beating Sabalenka with a forehand winner in the third game, dodging two breakpoints in the sixth.
After trading breaks to open the third set, Sabalenka’s errors began to pile up, and she fired into the net at the breakpoint of the third game, giving the ninth seed Russia the edge.
“I saw myself in the mirror.”
Mira Andreva shared some interesting post-match reactions after beating Alina Sabalenka in the final of the Indian Wells Open.
Mira Andriva of Sky Sports Tennis:
“After the first set, she killed me again and I didn’t know what to do. I was a bit negative because I had a lot of opportunities and didn’t convert them.
“After taking a toilet break, I thought and tried to calm myself down, looking into the mirror and saying a lot of positive things, if not easy.
“I think I’m a bit surprised that I did that [WTA 1000 titles] Soon, but I’m confident in my game, knowing what I’m trying to do and what I expect from myself as soon as I go to court. ”
