Forward Jenny Hermoso says he has a “clear conscience” after being excluded from the Spanish team for the European Championship in Switzerland.
The 35-year-old Hermoso is a record goalscorer for Spain, playing a key role as she unlocked the World Cup in Australia in 2023 with 57 goals in 123 appearances on the national side.
After receiving the World Cup winner’s medal, Hermoso was kissed by former Spanish football federation boss Luis Ruviales without her consent.
Rubiales said the kiss was agreed upon, but was found guilty of sexual assault by the Spanish Supreme Criminal Court in February. He was spared from prison, but was ordered to pay a fine of 10,800 euros (£8,942).
After the announcement of the Spanish Euro 2025 squad, Hermoso said, “I have a really clear conscience. Especially when I remove an environment with such a bad energy from my life,” “focus on making Spanish European champions.”
Tigres Striker appeared in all six qualifying rounds for Euro 2025, but her last international appearance was in October 2024, not being called to the past four Spanish teams.
Head coach Montse Tome said the reason for her omission, saying, “I understand that Jenni is an important player. I talked to her about her situation. We did the same job as everyone else.
“We evaluated her performance by Tigress and spoke with her coach. In her position, we have Patri. [Guijarro]Aitana [Bonmati]Alexia [Putellas]Might [Zubieta]Vicki [Lopez] And even Mariona [Caldentey] or [Claudia] Pina can come there.
“It’s difficult to pick 23 players, but we do our job professionally. At the end of the day, that’s what we chose.”
Tome selected 11 members on the side of Spain’s World Cup winners as part of her squad heading to Switzerland.
Mariona Caldentie and Manchester City’s Leila Ouhavi, who launched Arsenal’s Champions League final victory at Barcelona, are included in the team along with two Baron D’s or winners Alexia Putters and Aitana Bonmati.
The euro starts on July 2nd, with Spain facing Portugal in Group B the following day.
