NAKURU – Principal of Basic Education Julius Bitoku said the Ministry of Education is investigating chaos after the suspension of Butare Girls play at Nakuru’s National Drama and Film Festival.
PS made a commitment Thursday evening during a press briefing. Meanwhile, the girls denied reports of police shedding tears.
Bitok said he had no idea what happened between the police officers and students stationed at the venue.
However, he quickly confirmed that the girls had returned to their school safely after they refused to perform during their assigned stage time.
He said the Ministry of Education respected a court order directing schools to participate in national conventions despite the schools flagging the play.
The school was initially not on schedule, so hours were allocated outside official hours, Bitok said.
“The girls were given the first slot, but they refused and said they couldn’t play without the director, former Kakamega Senator Clefas Malala,” he said.
The principal explained that the director is non-teaching and therefore cannot enter the drama festival venue.
He added that non-teachers who are not involved in the festival are against education regulations and that the ministry will review the rules.
When asked why the ministry is enforcing regulations, Malala, who has been conducting theater since 2013, said the ministry is investigating the issue with the intention of considering its enforcement mechanism.
He assures the public that the national drama festival was going smoothly.
