NAIROBI – President William Root has announced that the central government will work with Nairobi County to improve road conditions and improve the cleanliness of the streets of the capital.
During the Labor Day celebration at Uhuru Gardens, President Root said that the worsening infrastructure and poor sanitation in Nairobi requires urgent, coordinated action.
“Nairobi city is the face of Kenya. We must live in a city with dignity. I have confirmed with the Nairobi county government that we will complete all the link roads and ensure that Nairobi city has motor vehicle aisles.
His remarks come soon after Francis Atworli, Secretary-General of the Central Trade Union Organisation (COTU-K), sharply criticized City Hall for what he called Gross mismanagement.
Atouri accused county officials of failing to provide basic services despite collecting taxes from the hard work of Kenyans, and called on President Ruto to intervene.
“We cannot stay in the dirty city, the Hawker city, the Rider city, the Matatus city. When someone arrives at the airport on the Mombasa road, they are full of hawks who painted pictures of Kenyan poverty. This must come to an end.
The president previously emphasized that the government is determined to abolish insults and torts in slums through affordable housing programs in towns and cities.
He further said the government is expanding and modernizing schools, particularly in marginalized and densely populated areas, to accommodate more students and strengthen equality across the country.
